STORY SUMMARY

HAWAIʻI VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK - Precursory overflows from the north vent at the summit of Kīlauea continued for the third day.

(BIVN) – Precursory lava overflows continued from the north vent on Friday, as Kīlauea volcano remains active and highly pressurized.

The summit has inflated slightly over the past 24 hours, the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported on Friday, adding that continuous tremor remains the dominant seismic signal.

“Glow and flames were observed from the north-south-west vent complex throughout the night, with intermittent overflows and spatter bursts from the north vent,” the scientists wrote. “There are currently no signs of reactivation of the recent vents 1-6.”

The most recent high lava fountain event, episode 54, occurred exactly one month ago on August 25. It is unknown if episode 54 was the last high lava fountain event of this eruption. “It is not possible to say with certainty that this activity will lead to the onset of another fountain event at this time although conditions remain favorable,” the Observatory stated.

Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park temporarily closed most park areas ahead of Hurricane Nolo, which is forecast to bring heavy rain and possible flash flooding to Hawaiʻi Island this weekend. The Observatory says it will continue to monitor volcanic and seismic activity across the island.

“Poor weather may greatly reduce visibility on streaming cams and webcams available to the public,” the Observatory stated. “Monitoring will continue using a variety of geophysical tools.”
