HILO, Hawaii – The search for a fisherman who has been missing since falling into the Wailuku River on Saturday came to an end on Monday.

At 3:45 p.m., according to a fire dispatch, the body was seen floating face down 15 yards off-shore near the mouth of the Wailuku river and Hilo Bay. Rescue boat personnel recovered the body.

The Hawaii County Fire Department says they received a report of a 34 year old male, who bystanders say tripped and “fell into the Wailuku River while fishing from shore” between Kamehameha Avenue and Keawe Street.

Fire crews have been searching along the shoreline of the river and the waters of Hilo Bay for the last two days. Friends and family have been watching from the area where the fisherman went missing.

Hawaii County Police have not yet released the name of the victim.
