The Hawaii County Council met for the first time in the refurbished chamber at 25 Aupuni Street in Hilo on Wednesday, and the moment received a special keiki blessing to mark the occasion.
A small crowd of residents waiting to make their public statements, councilmembers, and county staff all put civic issues aside in order to enjoy a performance by the children of Ka Umeke Kaeo, a Hawaiian Immersion Public Charter School in Keaukaha.
After a medley of special Hawaiian songs, the council got started with the days business. Although a few technical hiccups were reported, the new room appeared to be well equipped for the future. The councilmembers conducted the day’s business surrounded by large projection screens, new microphones, and a spacious council table to sit behind.
The council had been meeting on the second floor of the Ben Franklin building as the Hilo county building underwent the $25 million renovation.
