More than 400 residents and healthcare professionals gathered at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort on Friday to discuss the pressing healthcare challenges that face the island.

Hawaii County’s 2010 Conference, entitled “Building a Healthier Future Together,” focused on the creation of innovative, collaborative solutions to the most pressing healthcare challenges: access to care and an acute shortage of healthcare providers.

The Keynote Presentation at the conference was given by Katherine Gottlieb, who described the vast improvements in healthcare that Native Alaskans experienced by better integrating their cultural identity into the delivery of services.

The conference also formally introduced the Hawaii County Beacon Grant, a $16 million dollar federally funded initiative to accelerate the use of health information technology and reduce costs and improve the quality of healthcare in the county. Mayor Billy Kenoi noted that Hawaii County was one of only 15 communities in the United States selected for the Beacon Community Program award.

The event was free to the public.
