October 27, 2010 – HONOLULU, Hawaii

Henk and Akemi Rogers are asking the state for more time to build a forest bird sanctuary on about two and one half acres of their land at Puu WaaWaa. Last year the state Department of Land and Natural Resources approved building the a Native Forest and Bird Habitat Restoration and Research Facility, provided it start by an October 23rd deadline.

The land board planner is recommending approval of the Rogers’ reqest for an extended deadline to June 30th, 2011. According to Michael Donoho of Kukui Planning in Waimea, the bird sanctuary project at “Rogers Ranch” needs anther six months to deal with a state access easement.

Audrey Barker, Staff Planner with the Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands, is recommending that the BLNR approve an extension to June 30, 2011.
