HILO – Inspired by the kapu aloha on display during the blockade of the Thirty Meter Telescope, Hawaii residents are flocking to Mauna Kea. Last Thursday, 31 people were arrested in connection with the blockade of the $1.4 billion observatory. However, the incident only strengthened the support for the protectors of the sacred mountain. On Monday, two figures active on the international front lines of the Hawaiian Kingdom joined the gathering.
Big Island Video News interviewed political scientist Dr. David Keanu Sai and attorney Dexter Kaiama about the latest developments on Mauna Kea and the international response.

While I support Keanu’s educational effort, I do not support his self-proclamation, which is without merit or standing under international law. I hope that people stick to the basic issue, protecting Mauna Kea and enforcing STATE laws that should be preventing it from being built because TMT violates STATE law. It will be on the State and County level that this effort will be successful. Remember that state law is based upon Kingdom of Hawaii law, first created by Kamehameha III in 1840. Yes, the US assisted American businessmen in the illegal overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawai’i. Yes, this wrong must somehow be made right. But saving Mauna Kea from further development should first be a populist movement that goes to the state Supreme Court since it is clear that TMT violated state law.

Why I support the Protectors of Mauna Kea
1. Mauna Kea is sacred to traditional Hawaiian culture.
2. The status of sacred ensures the preservation and continuation of all things that depend on Mauna Kea.
3. Hawai’i is the endangered species capital of earth–for those who jokingly say that “all Hawai’i was sacred, get out of the way of progress”–the lack of sacred status is what allowed the 6th Mass Extinction to progress here. Kanaka Maoli have been ignored and trampled on for too long. Aloha ‘Aina is how to avoid the extinctions and make things better.
4. Increasingly rare insect and plant populations have dropped like a rock since the telescopes were forced on Mauna Kea, yet US gov’t is dragging its feet in listing them as endangered.
5. The 8 year process the TMT has taken through the fake State of Hawai’i is more like a train running on tracks towards a predetermined goal, running over laws and native culture to reach it’s prize.
6. This project is symbolic of the illegal state of Hawai’i’s (banana republic) colonial legacy of genocide, ecological imperialism, and imported notion of western superiority (arrogance).
7. I am dependent on Mauna Kea for spring water, therefore, I have a responsibility to protect the source of pure water.

Pretty short sighted Cheryl. I worked on Keck II and JNT in a financial capacity. Those were great paying jobs in 1992-1993. Those workers not only were paid well but they lived in the base camp FREE during the week and their meals were FREE too. They banked a lot of money. Kiewit even gave some workers FREE interisland airfare on weekends, so they could carry that fat check home to their families.
Not only do these telescope projects provide much needed work to the often uneducated Hawaiian worker, they pay well to those who are willing to brave the inhospitable environment on top of Mauna Kea. I spent more time listening to whining about the temps than anything else.
Not once did I ever see a native chanting or banging on a drum in an effort to “honor” the gods or ancestors of Mauna Kea. What a joke. They sure did like to ski down the short run from Keck II to the main road though. LOL.
Wrong again Cheryl. The jobs for the native Hawaiians will be in the construction of the telescope and all of the businesses that supply materials to the project. This includes wholesalers and retailers in Hilo. Concrete companies, Steel distributors. Hardware companies. Safety equipment retailers. Grocers. Instrument Calibration service providers, etc. That doesn’t count the money the workers spend when they visit Hilo or Kona at night or on weekends. Some of the workers even buy automobiles on the island to perform errands. The completed telescope will be staffed with highly educated scientists that will perform their work at night(obviously) and continue to live at the scientist housing in the base camp. They too spend money in local businesses. So short sighted of the protesters. Where were all of you 30 years ago?????
No, you should do your homework before spouting off about things you obviously know nothing about. The money that WILL BE spent to build the TMT will partially help all Hawaiians by providing jobs that pay well. Those jobs provide income that the workers take back to their homes and they spread that money to other businesses in the community. It is also private money…..not public Hawaiian tax money that is being spent to build any telescope. As you say, if people have fallen on hard times and don’t have a place to live, what good would it do to spend the money on schools and/or children if the families don’t have money? They need work….unless you are one of those people who EXPECT handouts?
As for what “was done to our ancestors”, how long will you continue to complain about being a victim? How long will you cry about the past; something you can’t change? My experience and conversation with those who work on the current telescopes on Mauna Kea tells me that while well-intended the reality of what you write is not always the case. To your last question, many of the people that I know are on the mountain this moment have been involved for longer than 30 years. I was not living here nor aware of the situation 30 years ago. In 1893 the U.S. Navy overthrew the Government. The actions of the U.S. Navy DID NOT EXTINGUISH THE HK Nation. The Hawaiian Kingdom still existed and still exists today as an independent nation. There are two ways that the U.S. Government can accept a Treaty offer from another country, like the Republic of Hawaii, that was recognized by all International Countries as the rightful government here in Hawaii. Liliuokalani had abdicated,
and sworn allegiance to the Republic 3 years before. The first way is
when a President sends the Treaty offer to the U.S. Senate in which it
requires a 2/3 majority vote to pass. The other way is when a
Congressman, in this case Congressman Newlands, offers the Treaty to
Congress. This is called a Congressional-Executive Agreement. A
Congressional-Executive Agreement requires a majority vote in the House
and the Senate and then signed by the President. The North American
Free Trade Agreement “NAFTA” Treaty was passed in this fashion during
the Clinton Administration. It should be noted that the vote to accept
the Treaty of Annexation offer from Hawaii was 209-91(way over
two-thirds) and 42-21(exactly two-thirds) in the Senate. So the vote in
the House was really moot when a 2/3rds majority was garnered in the

I join this fray with great trepidation. Both sides present excellent arguments but i would like to add some information to both sides that may not be pleasing to either.
1. In my eighty two years I have reached the conclusion that the Universe is Alive, ie Sentient, and therefore everything is sacred. We were created to be caretakers of the Earth which is also Sentient. Looking at our record of bombing each other, strip mining, fracking, clear cutting, overpopulating, and otherwise destroying and polluting the earth, we have done a very poor job.
I have no druthers as to whether the TMT SHOULD be built, and I do not know how much is enough. We have learned much from the existing telescopes, however ground based telescopes have major limitations. If we could force the military to turn loose of their antigravity technology which is hidden in black projects, we could put the TMT on the moon or in space and access it weekly if necessary. (Quote: Ben Rich, Lockheed Skunk Works Director admitted In His Deathbed Confession,:“We already have the means to travel among the stars, but these technologies are locked up in black projects, and it would take an act of God to ever get them out to benefit humanity.”

2. In this world we live in, it appears that might makes right, and the meek and weak always get eaten. For all history, one nation after another has attempted to devour each other, Japan and Germany tried but were defeated. Given their records concerning the countries they captured, would life here in Hawaii be better now if they had won?
3. Perhaps, because of an asteroid strike or other disaster, the US will go the same way as Rome and Hawaii will again be isolated. Will we have learned to live in peace, or will we again fight to see who will be king while the rest are serfs?
Remember that King Solomon was considered wise when he started his reign, but because he enslaved his own people, he was greatly hated and his policies caused the division of Israel.

My construction trailer sat on the hill behind Keck II. Not ONCE, did I ever see any non-construction personnel worshipping, laying flowers, beating drums, chanting, crying or doing anything other than snapping photos or skiing in the winter months. These protesters are a joke. They’re like the nasty uncle who comes to a birthday party three hours late and complains there isn’t any food left.

You obviously don’t know anything about construction, telescopes, cars nor maintenance. So let me throw you a bone today free of charge. There are a lot of vehicles on construction sites. Many of the tools that are used to repair or maintain those vehicles are rented from businesses like Mike’s Tools in Hilo or Kona. Just like worker owned vehicles, TMT construction trucks will need constant maintenance, either on Mauna Kea or often driven to town for that maintenance. You do know that trucks that operate at 13,700 feet require constant maintenance, right? So with your tunnel vision about sacred mountains, you have failed once again to connect the dots of your protest with your affiliation with Mike’s Tools. I hope the white guy Mike knows about you and how your protesting will be affecting his income over the next decade. Maybe he will protest you with a pink slip?

I do think, however, your efforts on TMT are not genuine. Construction projects on Mauna Kea began more than 30 years ago. Where were your parents and grandparents back then? The time to prevent these projects on sacred land comes BEFORE the first concrete footing is put in place. Secondly, let’s say you gain independence from the United States? Will you have a democracy? Will you appoint a new queen? Why would you trade democracy for a monarch? Would you rather give your tax money to enrich one person or family or a government that you disapprove of? I admire your vision but it has many logistical holes to say the least. Just remember; during your protests, many Hawaiians(not just Caucasians) are depending on the work.
