HILO – Pualani Kanaka’ole Kanahele testified before the University of Hawaii Board of Regents in Hilo on Sunday, educating the officials on Mauna Kea, Ka’ohe, and the religious and cultural significance of the land to Native Hawaiians.
Regents held the special meeting to hear from the public regarding the management of Mauna Kea by the university, which holds a master lease on the summit from the Department of Land and Natural Resources. The recent outcry over the planned construction of Thirty Meter Telescope on the northern plateau on the sacred mountain prompted the meeting.
Kanahele is part of Hilo’s highly respected Kanaka’ole ohana of kumu hula and cultural practitioners. She is recognized across Hawaii, especially for her work during the annual Merrie Monarch Festival, where she interprets the meaning behind the hula performances for the TV broadcast.
Of the Ka’ohe lands, which include Mauna Kea, Kanahele said it is well understood by Hawaiians as the “place where we will find water, always.” She said Hawaiians were not surprised by a recent water find at Pohakuloa, “because we believe in the words of our ancestors. They say this is Ka’ohe, this is Ka’ohe to us.”
“That’s what we are fighting for,” Kanahele told regents. “This is our soul. This is our way of life. This is not our job; we don’t earn money from doing this. But for generations after generations after generations… we will continue to do what we are doing here to today.”
it seems there are two Gods here…Jehovah of the world,creator of all forms of life…and the gods of old Hawaii…any one who has read the Bible…know that God cursed the earth for the sins of man…but left instructions on how to save one’s immortal soul…thru Jesus Christ …he warns humans…not to believe in any other gods…The first commandment…now there are those who do not believe a single word of the Bible…but instead turn to other gods…that’s fine with me….Jehovah does not force any one to believe in him…what are we to do?…there needs to be wisdom on both sides…or the result will be civil war…there needs to be a place where non believing peoples of Jehovah…be kept seperated from those that do believe in Him…let those who want the gods of old hawaii rule in their eyes…and let the Christains believe in their God….one can not have both….

The protesters tried to block the overthrow of the old religion.
So, the King sent his warriors and killed all the protesters. Hawaiian
culture did not allow protesters to invoke the old religion to block
actions ordered by the government.
Diverdave, You are spot on! It’s interesting to hear her say that Mauna Kea is our God. Are these the descendants of Kekuaokalani perhaps? The old ways were abolished by Kamehameha and yet they still take the old mythology literally? We could look at it as reference and from a historical perspective but not to be taken literally. It’s interesting how a lot of those opposed mention the overthrow but disregard/avoid the fact that the old akua were discouraged? I am part Hawaiian myself and I see TMT as a wonderful tool to honor our kupuna’s legacy of navigation and observation of the stars.

The mo’i is not sacred…he is revered as “godly-like” but yet he is not sacred…The ali’i class was incorporated by the Tahitians because Pa’ao brought the ideology with him as well as the Ku image…Talking about state and religon not coincidal with each other?
