HILO, Hawaii - Geologist Rick Hazlett talks about the fascinating formation of the Wailuku River, one of Hawaii Island's most beautiful - and dangerous - features.

UPDATED on Mar 13, 2018

(BIVN) – With the famous Rainbow Falls, popular Boiling Pots, and other scenic spots… Few places on Hawaii Island are more stunning, or dangerous, than the Wailuku River.

The island was reminded of that danger on February 25, when a another body was pulled from the river.

The body was later identified as that of a 28-year-old travel nurse from Chicago, who was lost to the raging waters of the river in January, but never found.

A few months earlier in November, a couple from California lost their lives in the same river.

On January 30, Rick Hazlett – an affiliate geologist with the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory and University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo – gave a talk on the Volcanic geology, and history, of Saddle Road.

Hazlett’s talk included the formation of what is now the Wailuku River.
