(BIVN) – Heavy rains soaked parts of Hawaii Island Friday afternoon, as flooding was reported in parts of Kohala.
As of 5:15 p.m. HST, a Flood Advisory was in effect for the entire Big Island.
“At 5:10 p.m. HST, radar indicated heavy rain was still observed across the Hamakua area, over the Kau District near Wood Valley and Pahala, and in the Puna District near Mountain View and Volcano,” the National Weather Service said.
Earlier in the late afternoon, there were reports of very heavy rain and thunderstorms from Waimea up to Saddle Road Junction and down through South Kona.
Video taken from a home on the “dry side” of Waimea showed rain pouring off the roof and over gutters.
In a civil defense message, officials reminded:
- Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to be on the alert for possible flooding conditions.
- Motorists are urged to exercise caution while driving. Road closures may occur without notice.
- Remember, if lightning does threaten your area, the safest place to be is indoors.
A High Surf advisory is also in effect for North Kohala, Hamakua, Hilo and Puna.
