The 40th anniversary of Earth Day was observed during a special event at the Panaewa Rainforest Zoo on Saturday.

The zoo was packed with families celebrating this year’s theme: “Hiki Nō Nā Keiki ke Hana”, meaning Kids Can Do It.

And did it they did… like this group seen planting mamaki around the Zoo to attract butterflies for everyone’s enjoyment.

Other kids learned about sustainable projects underway at the zoo, like making Bokashi mud balls to keep the ponds free of sludge and algae… like those in Namaste the Bengal Tiger’s enclosure.

Other attractions: a Worm Petting Zoo, composting activities, a scavenger hunt, and a performance by the Waiakea Middle School Ukulele Band.
