Hapuna, Hawaii – VIDEO by David Corrigan

As the eyes of the surfing world were focused on Oahu for the running of the legendary Eddie Aikau big wave competition in Waimea Bay, neighbor islands braced for the side effects of the gigantic swell. However, aside from the high surf warning issued for northeast and west facing shores on the Big Island, it was pretty much business as usual.

At the popular Hapuna beach along the Kohala coast, waves were described as “huge” at times, and in this video an occasional large set can be seen rolling into the shoreline. The pounding waves were a challenge for surfers to catch a decent ride. Lifeguards were happy to report that no saves or assists were needed, despite the rough conditions.

Around the island, surf reports informed enthusiasts that the best waves were along point breaks up and down the Hamakua Coast, but not much was reported to exceed 10 feet.
