Drivers heading into Waimea today may notice a hiker on a three day trek from Hilo to Waimea.

Will Zucker is walking on his second “Hike for Hunger”

Big Island Video News caught up with Zuker along Highway 19 on the Hamakua Coast on Monday. A sales manager with Mahalo Broadcasting, Zucker is hiking to create awareness for the Hawaii Island Food Basket, which collects and distributes food for our needy island residents.

Nani Lee of the Hawaii Island Food Basket says more than one of every six people living on Hawaii Island need food from the Food Basket, and they have seen a 25 percent hike in the number of people served in the first nine months of this year, compared to 2009.

You can help in Zucker’s quest by making a donation at one of the KTA supermarkets along his route. He will be at the Waimea KTA this afternoon, collecting nonperishable foods…

Then its back on the road tomorrow to KTA’s Waikoloa Village Market.

Then he will hike south on on Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway, winding up at KTA Kailua-Kona on Saturday and then KTA Keauhou for a final collection. The public can also join Zucker along his route.

The Food Basket also welcomes monetary donations at any of the KTA locations during the Hike For Hunger.
