The blaze created havoc on Hualalai Road and smoke was visible from across Kailua Village on Friday afternoon. Civil defense officials said no homes were endangered in a message distributed to the public just before 3 p.m.
Fire officials described the conditions during the firefight in a media dispatch issued in the evening:
Fuel for the fire was heavy, with dry grass well above head height and Kiawe trees. Variable winds coming from the south. Upon initial fire attack, fire started from the south end, moving north toward Hualalai rd. Fire is still active within the burn area. Fire is ~60% contained and a dozer line is being cut at this time. Fire personnel will continue working on hotspots throughout the night and mop-up operations will continue tomorrow.
Fire officials say the cause of the blaze is undetermined.
