HILO, Hawaii – A stolen Red Cross Ford F150 Pickup Truck was recovered this morning in Papaikou.
Hawaii County Police issued an alert saying the vehicle was found at 9 a.m.
The truck drew lots of attention on Thursday, when news was learned of its apparent theft from a Red Cross parking lot in Hilo only hours before Hurricane Iselle was set to make landfall. “This vehicle is especially needed by the Red Cross for disaster response for Iselle tonight,” wrote the Red Cross on its Facebook page, “and the coming days and for Julio in the days following. The Red Cross is also concerned that the individual(s) who stole the truck may be misrepresenting themselves as Red Cross staff or volunteers.”
On Thursday, Big Island Video News interviewed Barney Sheffield, the sole Red Cross disaster coordinator for Hawaii Island. With the imminent storm and the stolen vehicle on his mind, Sheffield was shaken but managed to share important shelter information in this short video.
We’ll have more information as it becomes available.
