Hawaii DOT

Runway 8-26 will be closed for airfield maintenance and lighting work on Wednesday night, May 20, through Friday morning, May 22, from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m., nightly. During this time, flight patterns will be modified to use Runway 3-21, resulting in increased air traffic over Hilo Town and the Keaukaha community. Work is weather permitting.

In addition, Runway 8-26 will be closed on June 14, through July 17, Monday through Friday, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., nightly. Construction will repave the middle section of the runway to provide a smooth surface for airplane arrival and departures.

The HDOT appreciates residents’ patience and understanding as we work to improve the conditions of the Hilo International Airport runways. Hawaii DOT media release
