Kona Sewage Spill Closes Beaches Around Kailua Bay

STORY SUMMARY

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii - A sewage spill that occurred earlier today at Ali’I Drive and Palani Road due to a ruptured main has entered the ocean at Kailua Bay.

(BIVN) – Sewage from ruptured main that occurred earlier today has entered the ocean in Kona, closing the waters around Kailua Bay.

The Department of Environmental Management reports the sewage spill occurred earlier today at Ali’i Drive and Palani Road entered the sea at Kailua Bay.

Warning signs are posted and Kailua Bay – from Kamaka Honu Beach to Hulihee Palace – is currently closed out to 1,000 feet offshore, civil defense reports.

“Water samples have been taken and the Department of Health Clean Water Branch has been notified,” Hawaii County Civil Defense says. “Please cease all water activity in this area until tests indicate bacteria levels are normal.”

The spill is contained and repairs to the ruptured main will beginning tomorrow, and the county says motorists can expect road closures and/or detours in this area beginning tomorrow.

You will be notified as the situation changes, the county says.
