(Big Island Video News) PUNA, Hawaii – The Hawaii County Fire Department confirms a brush fire was again set off by the active lava flow in Puna today, mauka of Kauakahi Place and Niaulani Street.
The plume from the fire could be seen for miles in the afternoon, from Mt. View to Hilo. The smoke was also visible on USGS webcams stationed around the district, like the one located in Kapoha seen above.

While the flow front has stalled, one new slow moving active finger has broke out mauka and is Northeast of the last breakout and is still inside the fire breaks. Monitored fire spread on S side of new fire break. 2 fire personnel to remain on scene to monitor and control fire breaks throughout the night.Hawaii County Fire Dept. on Jan. 23, 2015
A D-9 bulldozer was also deployed to reinforce the Ainaloa fire break, fire officials say.
