Fifth grade students from East Hawaii were challenged to construct vessels that could travel two meters in 15 seconds, powered only by solar energy and an electric motor.

About 200 students competed in the third annual Solar Boat Regatta at Hilo Middle School on Saturday.

Fifth grade students from East Hawaii were challenged to construct vessels that could travel two meters in 15 seconds, powered only by solar energy and an electric motor.

The annual event is sponsored by Hawaii Electric Light Company and the Department of Education.
