The Hawaii Legislature has adopted a resolution urging the governor to NOT transfer Hapuna Beach State Park to Hawaii County.

Thye popular Kohala Coast beach falls under the purview of the Department of Land and Natural Resources. The County of Hawaii was willing to assume the resposibilty for operating and maintaining the park.

The resolution even says the “Governor and the Mayor of the County of Hawaii have entered into a written agreement authorizing the Governor to transfer the estate, title to, and interest in Hapuna Beach, as well as the Mauna Kea State Recreation Areas, from the State of Hawaii to the County of Hawaii.”

But state lawmakers were not so willing to let the beach park go, saying that the popular destination could genereate revenue for the state in the near future.
