STORY SUMMARY

MAUNA KEA - Our first interview with Lanakila Mangauil since the April 2nd arrests on Mauna Kea

MAUNA KEA – In our first interview with Lanakila Mangauil since the arrests on Mauna Kea, the Hawaiian cultural practitioner from Hamakua recalls the effort to defend the sacred mountain on April 2nd, which is seen as a pivotal moment. The 31 arrests made that day inspired people from across the state to become actively involved in the Thirty Meter Telescope blockade, either supporting the effort in person or staging demonstrations of their own on other islands (or across the globe).

This video combines the interview with footage taken on April 2 by Big Island Video News as well as Evan Bordessa and Lanakila Mangauil himself.

  1. He is a “cultural practitioner” what ever that means. These folks just make it up as they go along. He drives a car, has a cell phone, I’m sure he lives in a house in Hamakua with electricity(probably a family member’s or his girl friend’s house). And yes, he gets EBT foodstamps.

  2. I can’t believe this. They were getting arrested because they refused to move off the road. Plain and simple. Why is it so hard to do so? It’s a PUBLIC road for ALL to past through. Protest on the side and be considerate to the general public! All I really hear about why they are all protesting is the fact that the kingdom was overthrown illegally. MOVE FOWARD ALREADY! IMUA! I once had bitterness towards America but I realized the bigger picture. By all means, this is a telescope to further understand the COSMOS.

  3. We need to understand ourselves and our own world before answers in the cosmos will help us. We spend so much money to study space while we ruin our home. Seems pretty ignorant to me.

  4. He is sacrificing for us all.without people like him the future will be a polluted mess and no joy for them. Thank God for people willing to put it all on the line for what is right

  5. Keep on keepin on Dave. They despise rational people, especially if they’re right and white. LOL

  6. Uhuh, is there a Treaty of Annexation between the United States of America and the Hawaiian Kingdom??? NO, so that means Hawaii is not a part of the United States, the State of Hawaii Government is an illegally implanted government to make their illegal occupation appear legal and under International , the Laws of Occupation and the Geneva Convention the building of this telescope and the desecration of our lands is a WAR CRIME. And for your information with the advancement in technology telescopes are obsolete being the reason why 9 of the 13 telescope on Mauna Kea is no longer in use. You are now able to place a telescope on a satellite and look even further into space so, why are they really building this telescope??? As an investment to make money from tourism, to be used by the military for lazer technology and to make a statement that in spite of their illegal occupation they have taken over our sacred mountain just as they had done to the American Indians and other countries who revere their mountains to be sacred to their people. Lastly because the State of Hawaii is illegal and a War Crime in and of itself so too are their courts, the permits that they issued and the arrest being made by the police. So, before you go around making these uneducated statements make sure you get your facts straight by going to “hawaiiankingdom.org/blog” and get educated to our true history, the illegal occupation of Hawaii by the Ubnited States, the war crimes that are being committed and the extremely serious implications involved.

  7. Does this guy work??? You better believe it and so do the rest of us who are up there protecting our mountain!!!

  8. diverdave, why don’t you come up to the mountain and ask him yourself instead of flapping your jaws from a distance. It is bad enough that you don’t even know what a ‘Cultural Practitioner” is yet, you continue to make comments based on assumptions and not facts making yourself look like an idiot who really has nothing worth while to say. I am sure you have a car, a cell phone and a home with electricity and probably live with your parents, a girlfriend or maybe a wife who thinks you are an idiot.

Do see how people can do it to you too so, before you go around making these ridiculous comments make sure you get you facts straight by going to “hawaiiankingdom.org/bolg” and get educated to what is really going on……you’ll be glad you did. Take Care

  9. Oh my God not only do we have a “Glassy Eyed” person (must be her weed) in our mist, but a RACIST one at that. Just because you are white it doesn’t mean that you are….RIGHT!!! And for your information Red Eyes both you and diverdave are totally wrong so, before you continue to make a fool of yourself with your racist and useless comments go to “hawaiiankingdom.org/blog” and get educated to our true history and as what is really happening not only in protecting our mountain, but in the fact that Hawaii is not and has never been a part of the United States render this telescope and the entire State of Hawaii government to be not only illegal under International Law, but also WAR CRIME in and of itself warranting the building of this telescope and the arrest that are being made to war crimes as well.

So, I encourage you to get educated and to keep your racist comments to YOURSELF!!! Mahalo….

  10. Facts? Where are your facts that Lanakila has an EBT card? Probably living at a family member or girlfriends house? “Probably” does not mean “fact.” So you are more than just rude “diverdave.” No other word for you but to say you are just a liar, you do not speak truth. Our culture is important to us, it is who we are so yes we do need “cultural practioners” because our keiki need to remember where we came from, to be proud of who we are, and to be good stewards to our land and resources so that we may provide for our families for generations to come. Scoffing at a Cultural Practioner is like Scoffing at American or World Historians. If Hawaiian History is of no value to you then may be you should stay out of Our Hawaiian Issues and mind your own business, this is our home not yours!

  11. “They?” Many of us are White and Hawaiian, we are mostly mixed races here in Hawaii if you haven’t noticed. Maybe you only hang around white people IDK. But we Hawaiians love ALL races and have been gentle and kind. We’ve been taken advantage of for too long and it’s time we stand up for what is right. There are teachers and college professors protecting our Mauna and people are calling them uneducated, uninformed, stupid, not rational and racist remarks. You are no better than them. We have always given our Aloha to everyone and now we see the truth in people, the good and unfortunately the bad.

  12. Yeah, they meaning the protesters oh sensitive one. Have you bothered to read the hateful messages on here lately. THEY are like children shouting insults. Hawaiians are more racist now than ever. You’re full of it. Go read the posts. By the way, not all teachers are educated. If that were the case, the students would offer more facts and less vitriol.

  13. Blah blah blah Dutchy. Who cares what you believe? No one. If you don’t recognize a fellow nutty protester, that’s on you. Boy you protesters couldn’t solve any problem, even if the answer is right in front of you. Oh, little concerned Dutchy is “protecting the mountain”. First of all, it’s an inactive volcano moron. Secondly, were you smoking weed with good ‘ol glassy eyes during the last 3 decades until you sobered up to find 12 telescopes on your sacred spot? Duh. By the way small minded one, I will defend any person on here who actually offers up productive facts like DiverDave. I really don’t care what color someone is as long as they offer something intelligent and keep from name calling. So FO.

  14. Most of the hateful messages I have read have been coming from pro TMT people and they have been provoking the protectors, we’re not protesting the TMT, we’re not against science, I think most of us just don’t want the 14th telescope on our mauna. If someone told you you were stupid, ignorant, uneducated, irrational, retarded etc., provoked in those ways some people have a hard time being polite to haters like you who do that. You obviously don’t know much about our Hawaiian Culture and what Aloha means. When you push or keep prodding someone they just might strike back. We are tired of people like you and diverdave talking down on Hawaiians in a racist way, it’s like a KKK mentality. Not good and kind of scary and very sad. Sensitive? You said it not me so you must be huh? lol… smh. “Ms. Glassy Eye’s”

  15. calling people you don’t even know irrational and laughing about it with your ‘lol’ is how you try to provoke us and it’s not going to work.

  16. More provoking ms glassy eyed? And you wonder why people have been hateful (in your opinion) toward you?

  17. What a joke you and your group are. “Protectors”??? Yeah, right; more like the slackers or nappers. Even if you had excuses for sleeping through the first telescope project in 1968, where were you and your sistas in the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and the first 14 years of the new millennium??? You are a poser of the highest order who has conveniently forgotten about her ancestors to pursue other things during those decades. The only thing you protect is the shame you feel for being grossly late to the Mauna Kea debate. Good luck with your kingdom and your black soul. LOL

  18. Maybe you could start helping your neighbors by picking up all the trash on their properties. It’s a good start.

  19. Leilani, If I am wrong then tell us the “facts. What an absolutely racist thing to say; “it is our home not yours”. Did they teach you that racial supremacy in “Hawaiian Immersion” school, or did you go to the illegally segregated Kamehameha Schools?

  20. More David Sai nonsense. “Hawaii is not part of the U.S.” What a bunch of crack pots!

  21. Why don’t you enlighten us all as to exactly what an “Cultural Practitioner” is then. And since you know so much why don’t you tell us what he does for a living and who’s house he lives in, and what cell phone company he uses, what make of a computer he has, and what the make of the car he drives and gas station he buys gas at, and what his favorite EBT purchase is.

  22. Speak for yourself Paulo. This guy is certainly not “sacrificing for all of us”. He is just a loud mouth of the sovereignty fringe. The other 99% of people in Hawaii are in favor of the TMT.

  23. Yup exactly right this fool copy my name “live aloha” writing post with no aloha. Is that what you call poser? Posting links that nobody reads just like I have posted the petition on everything. Now she change her name again. Haha got no time for kid games. Cut her post and show it to whoever you can to make an example of how much Aloha these people have towards hawaii and it’s people. This is how you act when you get no for an answer.

  24. This is lame this donkeys saying the same dam thing over and over again. And this idiot posting links below me like we don’t know our shit. Come on idiot we might be uneducated to you on big island video news comment box but that’s it. I’ll just use your comments to help us expose the opposing party. Thanks for the info. Much Aloha

  31. tmt petition….errr…..live aloha……errrr,…..glassy eyes…….ida……LOL

  32. Hey Phil. Why are you upset that white people are enjoying Hawaii? You live in Las Vegas now. Secondly, why are you angry that white people aren’t fishing or surfing in your favorite spots? Shouldn’t that make you happier that they don’t have as much fun as you USED to have when you were actually near the ocean? Lastly, you are bagging on white people for naming their own children with Hawaiian sounding names, which is a sign of respect; yet your name is Phillip???? Dude, you’ve in the desert heat way too long.

  33. Phillip Cadiz · Server at SW Steakhouse said……
A Lotta comments are made by dumb fucking haoles who bought a place in hawaii not born n raised there… they don’t surf they don’t fish they name their kids shit like Lani because its easy to pronounce so they don’t sound like haoles saying it even tho they do… you just wanna be like us and live in paradise but you don’t understand what it is we actually hold valuable…. GO HOME YOU FUCKING HAOLES

  34. Glassy Eyed changed her name to “Treaty of Annexation” what an Imposter! Wow… *warning to all*

  35. * warning to all *
Glassy Eyed has changed her name to “Treaty of Annexation.”
She has stolen another persons identity. She was Glassy Eyed yesterday, today she’s Treaty of annextation. omg!

  36. “Treaty of Annexation”
    You are the Poser…
Yesterday your User Name was “Glassy Eyed”…
Read your comments…don’t you sound hateful? Why so much anger and hate for people you know nothing about? We have nothing but aloha. I will pray for you.

  37. Can someone please explain to me how putting a telescope on Mauna Kea will “destroy” Mauna Kea?

There are no environmental consequences. The mountain is so high up there is
basically no rain, that’s why the TMT will be up there in the first
place, and as for flora and fauna, well, I’ve heard the summit of the
mountain described as ‘barren as the surface of the Moon’.

Furthermore, the TMT will pay 1 MILLION DOLLARS in rent annually, and most of that
money will go towards the ENVIRONMENTAL PRESERVATION OF MAUNA KEA).

As for cultural objections, I don’t see the problem researching the
beginning and fate of the universe, stars and planets like our own and
other topics of astronomy and cosmology on Muana Kea when Mauna Kea is
considered a place of origins and is important to Hawaiian cosmology. It
seems to be complementary “A sacred science on a sacred mountain”.

    Also,
if you say that the TMT will be ‘building over the graves of
ancestors’, please show me a map showing all the ancient burial places
on Mauna Kea alongside the planned location for the TMT.

In order that Hawaiian astronomy and
cosmology can benefit from the telescope, at least 15% of the research
time on the TMT should be reserved for Hawaiian universities. In
addition, the data from the telescope should be made publicly available
so that ordinary Hawaiians and non-Hawaiians can benefit from the TMT.
In addition, the astronomers who do research at the TMT should simplify
and explain their results to the public, so we can all learn about our
    place in the universe.

I signed a petition to support the TMT and I
see no reason to protest against it. It is a benefit to Hawaii and the
world and needs to be built. If I lived in Hawaii I would be protesting
against the protestors. There is no reason not to build the TMT.

    Here is the petition:
