• HILO – The 63rd annual Hilo Orchid Society Show and Sale is taking place this weekend at a new venue. For the first time, the annual show – billed as the biggest of its kind in Hawaii – is being held at the Afook Chinen Civic Auditorium. As 2015 show chair Rick Kelley explained in the official program, the Civic was the inspiration behind this year’s theme:

“Since we are trying a new venue this year, we thought the theme of Orchids Avant-Garde captured the spirit of this year’s show. Orchids collectors have always searched out the new and unusual, so we decided to embrace this frame of mind. We hope you fall in love with all the beautiful, fragrant, exotic orchids you see in the exhibits.”

• The show kicked off on Thursday with a preview party and continues through the weekend. (Saturday 9 am – 5 pm, Sunday 10 am – 2 pm)
