STORY SUMMARY

HILO, Hawaii - USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientist Jim Kauahikaua explains what is going on with the current volcanic eruption.

(USGS) Fissure at Leilani and Kaupili Streets in Leilani Estates subdivision at 8:07 a.m. HST today. Lava on the road was approximately 2 m (about 2 yd) thick.

(BIVN) – USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientist Jim Kauahikaua gave an update to media outside the Civil Defense headquarters in Hilo on Friday, detailing what is known about the ongoing volcanic eruption in Leilani Estates.

Shortly after this interview, Hawai‘i County Civil Defense and the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory confirmed that a new vent opened near the intersection of Leilani Avenue and Kahukai Road. That’s in addition to the active volcanic vents located on Makamae, Kaupili and Mohala Streets.

The county also stated there is no activity at Puna Geothermal Venture at this time, adding that “PGV is secured.”

This interview took place before the series of large earthquakes, including a Magnitude 6.9, occurred on the south flank of Kilauea volcano.
