STORY SUMMARY

HAMAKUA COAST (BIVN) - As the Hamakua CDP enters its final phases, the community is asking county planners to consider ways to discourage development along the district's shoreline cliffs.

PEPEEKEO, Hawaii – The community review of the draft Hamakua Community Development Plan has been completed and now the Hamakua CDP Steering Committee will consider the feedback they heard in speakout sessions and in focused discussions across the district.

One thing planners heard at a recent meeting in Pepeekeo: residents want better protections for coastal resources.

County planners are considering specific policies regarding shoreline setbacks. Hamakua Councilwoman Valerie Poindexter was present to voice the concerns of her community. Whatever rules are implemented, the community was in agreement that meaningful enforcement is key.
