Halemaumau

Halema’uma’u is an active volcano vent; a pit inset within the floor of Halema’uma’u crater within the caldera at the summit of Kilauea. It has been the site of numerous eruptions throughout Kilauea’s history. The current summit eruption began on March 19, 2008, with an explosive event that created a new opening about 115 feet wide. Since then, the vent has grown, revealing a lava pond in November 2009 that has become more visible as the vent expands.
